Setting with numbering got changed ?? Help plz

Say I'm making an ouline and when I want to make a sub point I usually
press tab and that'll change the numbering from say I. to a. Well some
setting got changed and it's not doing that anymore. Now when I press
tab it spaces 5 spaces over, and doesn't change from point to sub
point. Does anyone know how to change it back to the default setting?

Thanks much, this is driving me crazy.

The 'magic setting' (in Word 2002) is Tools > AutoCorrect Options >
AutoFormat As You Type : Check Set left and first indent with tabs and
spaces. Don't be tempted to turn anything else on in this dialog.

But -

If you are not using styles for bullets and numbering, then you may have
lost this facility because the numbering scheme has changed.

If you try to use the tab on the first item of a list, it will change the
indent instead of changing the list level.
