I'm running 10.4.11 on a macbook. I was running Office 2008 no
problem for weeks, and then I suddenly had problems opening docs. I
would get the this doc is open by "another user" and wouldn't even be
able to open a copy of the doc. Opening new docs would result in the
"please repair the database" error I've seen on a few sites now. I
ended up removing Office and trying to reinstall, and now I can't get
past the setup assistant!

It crashes after the first page... It runs just fine on a second
account that I've set up, but after removing/reinstalling, and even
trying to copy the settings from other accounts I'm at a loss. When I
copy the settings from another account, I get the same errors that I
was getting before the reinstall.

I've checked permissions, run the Disk Uttility, etc.

Any ideas?

What happens if you create a new User in System Preferences? Can you open
your files there? (move some files to Shared folder for access in the new
User)

If yes, then the problem is in your User's folder. If no, the definitely try
the combo updater. If that fails you will need to do an "Archive & Install".

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Office. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.
