Setup/Configuration Problem

Hello all,

I have set up a lab/test environment for a group of our project leaders to
evaluate MS Project Server 2003 with MS Project 2003 and Office 2003
(Outlook) For this setupI followed the instructions in the setup
documentation. But is have bumped into one very serious (to me as I'm new to
this product and I'm out of my league) issue. When I try to connect to the
project server website I get following error:

Unable to connect to database. Check database connection information and
make sure the database server is running.

In the evenlog I get this error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 2.0
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 7/27/2004
Time: 4:05:47 PM
User: N/A
Computer: AOCSRV31
Description:
#50070: Unable to connect to the database STS_SERVERNAME_1 on SERVERNAME.
Check the database connection information and make sure that the database
server is running.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I have searched the internet for a solution but all I found was an error
about MSDE in

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=833183 or
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=833183 with a hotfix in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=829358

The error looks the same but it is not. The extra symptoms are not visible
on my server. MSDE is not even installed. Thus the fix does not work. Also
the workaround of stopping and starting the instance does not work(net stop
mssql$sharepoint,net start mssql$sharepoint). I have no instance but a
SHAREPOINT database in the default instance. Is this the issue?

The sharepoint services website seems to run fine.

I hope that this is a simple permissions issue but I have troube finding out
where to check what permissions. Any advice and help is greatly
anticipated.

Thank you!

If you install Project Server on the same web site on which you implemented
Windows SharePoint Services, you must add the projectserver path to the
excluded list for managed sites in SharePoint:

Start > Administrative Tools > SharePoint Central Administration

Under Virtual Server Configuration select Configure virtual server settings
Select your virtual server on the next page
Select Define managed paths from Virtual Server Management section
Add the projectserver URL to the excluded list on the resulting page
