"Setup encountered an error and will now close"

While installing any permutation of Office (whether the suite, or individual
apps, retail boxed or trial download, etc), i receive the error "Microsoft
Office Professional Plus 2007 encountered an error during setup." No
additional information, such as an error number, is provided.

This happens after choosing what to install, whether custom or typical,
after the installation has begun, after approximately 1% of the procedure has
completed. Just before the error screen comes up, it seeks the floppy drive.

Running Vista Ultimate, clean installtion of both Vista and Office. Have
tried removing registry keys, installer files, MSOCache files, rebooting,
praying, cursing, etc.

Any ideas?

I installed Vista in a virtual machine, and Office 2007 installs perfectly on
the Vista VM.

However, it does not install, as below, on the host PC. I have installed
Office 2003 as a stop-gap, and it does not upgrade from that, either; it
fails with the same error message.

I've had the same problem.
