Setup fail

N

Noriel Chang

We're trying to install PS2003 on a single machine (Win 2K3, SQL Srv,
SharePoint Services) and during the setup process the setup gauge starts to
rolling back the installation and displays an error message box that it could
not complete the setup.

The last thing I could red was something to do with the creation of a root
site on IIS. The last entry in event viewer was an error regarding with
MSDTC, altough I don't know if it is related. I noted that the databases for
Project Server and Share Point were created.

Does anybody have some clue on what's going on?

TIA,
Noriel

Noriel,

I apologize for saying "me too", but I am having the same rollback problem,
with the last message of the install being "Installing IIS Virtual root".
Wondering if you or anyone else has discovered the source of this problem?
Any help or hints would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Myron,

Seems that only we had this problem during the setup...

Ok, here the trick:

- On my system the MSDTC service was running under the "Network Services"
account. We changed to the System account and we could complete the setup.

- My engineer also found a post on the microsoft web site about a fix
regarding the MSTDC service on Windows 2003 Servers that cannot restart on
certain conditions. Microsoft confirmed the problem and asked to contact
your support in order to get the fix. We tried our local support, but they
did not help that much. We never got the fix...sorry I couldn't find the
post ID on my mail archives.

I hope this can help you.

Regards,
Noriel

Thanks Noriel. Here's what fixed the problem for us:

It appears that the issue was related to password synchronization issues
with the IWAM account.

Here was the fix in a nutshell:

Reset the password for the IWAM in AD and also in the metabase Then do an
iisreset and a synciwam and try to install Project. Here is the detail:

1. Use adsutil.vbs (usually in c:\inetpub\adminscripts) to reset the
password. adsutil.vbs set w3svc/wamuserpass "password"

check out http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;297989

2. Go to GUI (Users and computers, or local whatever) and change the
password to match what you just did in step 1.

3. Run Synciwam.vbs which is (usually in c:\inetpub\adminscripts)

I am extremely glad we got this working, this issue was really knawing at me.
