Is it best to create a website collection first from the share point
admin site, then create the PWA site fron the top level site, or should
I create the initial site as a application, then create PWA within it?

TIA

The Technet guide states you should create a site collection, although
technically PWA will work without one.

I've never tried not creating a site collection, and the only thing I could
think of that might be different is the WSS search function. WSS search has
a scope of a site collection, so you may only be able to search individual
sites without one.

There's no cost to creating a SC, so why wouldn't you do it?

You need a web application in order to create a site collection and PWA.

If I was installing I would create a web application, then site collection
on the same web app.

Create a web app for the SSP, create the SSP

Provision PWA on the web app with the site collection.

Paul:

I thought I had read that a web application had to be created first, in
order for SharePoint to recognize the PWA site. What I want to do is
from SharePoint admin, is setup a SharePoint site for the client.
Within this site create the PWA site or have it accessable with a tab at
the top of the pgae and a link to the PWA site from the left hand side
menu. If I understand you correctly, I should be able to create the
Site Collection and then a PWA site next. Is this correct?

Is there an online document describing step be step how to set this up?
I created another ssp web app, but when I try to go to it, I get a
page not found error. The ssp site should only be accessable locally
shouldn' t it? I noticed the url created for it by SP is
http://sspadmin.mydomain.local/ssp/....

TIA
