several problems, possibly related

I recently cleaned house of trojans. I'm running XP, SP1 and Office XP,
sp3. At this point there are 3 error messages of annoyance. Recently, I
unloaded and reloaded Office - no help.
When I close Word it says "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem
and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
When I close Excel it says "Microsoft Excel has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
When I close Internet Explorer it says "The instruction at "xxx"
referenced memory at "xxx". The memory could not be "written" Click ok
OK to terminate the problem.

Btw, I've been unsuccessful upgrading to XP, SP2.

Tried once again to install XP, SP2. After hundreds of errors of the
type "The instruction at "xxx"
referenced memory at "xxx". The memory could not be "written" Click ok
OK to terminate the problem. I was able to install SP2. Now, all these
errors are gone. Finally!!!
