several problems with functionality

Word 2007, For some reason Word will not allow me to select text with my
mouse.

Also when I try to close Word I get an error message that the program has
stopped working and I can either look for a solution on line or restart the
program.

In a document that I open my mouse or my touch pad cannot be used to move
around text. These problems are isolated to word. I have downloaded the
latest mouse drivers.

You need to delete or rename a key in the registry. Read Herb Tyson's reply in

Thanks Jay, that did the trick. Curious where that error comes from.

Some people have reported this problem after Microsoft Update installs some
Office updates. It doesn't happen to everyone, or on every update, or
necessarily because of an update. It may have something to do with having Word
open when the update is installed. We just don't know.
