Shading a single word

I am trying to shade single words in my outlines. I highlight the word go to
format pick shading and borders and pick the colors i want. But when I click
ok it alway highlights the entire row of words what do I do to fix this. It's
driving me nuts.

Specifics may vary a little depending on version of Word, which you didn't
mention, but... In the Borders & Shading dialog make sure the "Apply To:"
list is set to Text rather than Paragraph.

Alternatively use the Highlighter tool rather than Borders & Shading.
