Shading compatibility ( Word XP to Word 97)

I seem to be loosing the cell shading in my documents when
I go from Word XP to Word 97. When a template is created
in office XP and I open it in 97 all cell shading is lost,
even when I set XP to save as 97, 200, rtf.
I have looked through the KB and other forums but can find
any reference to a formatting compatibility issue. Has
anyone else experienced this?

Some XP documents also open in 97 with the paragraph
formatting completely jumbled, but this is rare.

Word 2000 introduced a larger palette of colors and shading than was
available in Word 97. If you're using a color not available in Word 97, the
backward conversion will be less than satisfactory. If you frequently have
to create documents for use in earlier versions, you may want to (for the
specific document) enable the option to "Disable features introduced
after..." (Save tab of Tools | Options).

Thanks you,
I have actually tried disabling features not available in
97 and resaving the document as a 97 rtf.
Also the color I am using is 10% Gray scale. This color
was an option in 97.
The one strange thing I have found is if I do to tools
options General Tab and select show blue background with
whit text the boxes are shaded white as though the
formatting exist, but it doesn't show up under normal
color settings regardless of the view. Normal, Page, Print
ect....
