Shading of words in Word X document

When I edit a Word document in Word MAC I notice every word before my
edit/change goes from black to a lighter shade of black... and font
proportion seems to get skinnier. I never noticed this with a PC.

Is there a setting in Word X I can make to not have this happen?

Are you saying this happens when the words are highlighted? And then goes
back when the highlight is released?

There is some kind of preference related to Quartz smoothing in Word X
(Word>Preferences, you'll have to explore for it, though start with the View
panel). That may make a difference.
