Shapes - Office Layout

About 3-4 years ago I used Visio to create an office layout for a small company I worked for when they moved into a larger building and renovated it. I distinctly recall Visio working like an easy-to-use Architectural program with MANY stencils relating to Office Layout including one stencil just for dozens of wall types, one stencil for dozens of plants/decorations, another stencil for office equipment and many more. (Also one stencil just for wiring/electrical with specific wiring objects like 2-way, 3-way switches, dimmers, motion sensors etc.) Basically you could complete a full set of office (or home) blueprints from Visio!

Now, in Visio 2000, the Office Layout Stencil is VERY generic, with one encompassing stencil and a minimal selection of drawing objects to select from. I find this new version much more difficult to use, as I am so limited. Is this something for which additional stencils can be downloaded, or am I stuck using the dumbed-down version of Office Layout?

The original Visio may have been a pre-MSFT version and that may explain the difference, but I am hoping not. Usually MSFT makes software better, not worse! ;) Perhaps MSFT took away those features because they conflicted with another MSFT software program??? I also swear that building an office layout from scratch was much easier in the older version becuase when you used a "room object" it did not automatically pop into existince with dimension lines, area calculations and associated connection points all automatically included. By the gods, do I hate that "feature"! It takes more time to delete the area calculation and then stretch a room to needed size than by simple drawing 4 individual walls! Seems inefficient to me.

Any advice about where to turn, what to download or what to buy to add back the expanded stencils would be great! I am once again in the process of renovating my office and I don't want to spend thousands on an AutoCad or similar program when I know Visio was more than sufficient in the past!

It sounds like you are looking at the content in Visio Standard instead of
Visio Technical or Professional. Microsoft Visio still has a very rich set
of Building Plan shape content, over 1500 shapes. This content is available
in the 2000 release in Visio Technical 2000. In more recent versions, you
can find the content in Visio 2002 Professional or Visio 2003 Professional -
(Technical and Professional were merged).
