We are using Visio Standard 2002 SP 2

I happen to like the shapes window at the left side of the screen.
Unfortunately, I often cannot get it back once I close it.

How do I reopen this window?

View -> Shapes Window

Is the window docked or floating?

There is no View | Shapes Window menu (at least in the copy of Visio I am
using - 2002)

ah yes, that menu was introduced in Visio 2003.
Do you mean that when you close the diagram and then reopen it that
the stencil(s) are not shown?
If so then you need to save the document (or SaveAs) and ensure the
Workspace is ticked. This option get quite well hidden in later
version of Visio. Why does is get hidden?
