Shared Borders Nav Bars not showing

J

Jim Harvey

Hello,

Our web site runs fine locally, the nav bars and buttons appear in the top
and left shared broders and work as designed.

When we publish the new index page and the top and left shared borders pages
the shared Border pages do not appear, only the basic index page.

We have checked with our web hosting company and they confirm that all is
set up properly on their end.

We are not getting any error messages so it's hard to determine what is not
working.

If the host is running the FP Server Extensions, open the remote site
directly in FrontPage and choose Recalcualte HYperlinks from the Tools menu.

If you're publishing by external FTP, be sure to publish the hidden
_borders, _themes, and _derived folders along with everything else.

Jim,

Thanks, we will give that a try.

I've read that the Dynamic Web Template is suppose to replace the "Shared
Borders" functionality in FP 2003.

Should we be trying to implement DWT's instead of shared borders?

Hi-
I happened to over-hear (?) your conversation.... DWT's are usually
recommended over shared borders. For one, with DWT's, you can set
established, non-editable content anywhere on the page, whereas with shared
borders, you are limited to the border areas. I advise anyone to do it at
the beginning of a project, rather than wait and have to convert a whole
site (or 2 or 3, like I did...) from shared borders to DWT's.
There is also the 'Include Page' feature in FP 2003 - I have not used it
myself - but I know in general that it is about setting a chosen part of a
page to be its own separate page (hence the name, 'include page'), so you
can preset or schedule content according to your needs.
Good Luck,...Frank

In general yes, DWTs are superior to Shared border. However, because DWTs
were new in FP2003 and the lastest server extensions are FP2002, DWT's don't
work properly if you edit a server-extended site directly in FrontPage.

If you always edit the site as a disk-based Web or on Windows SharePoint
Services, DWTs are fine.

PS
You can also use a DWT in a FP SE site, but you always need to open all affected pages to update any changes in the DWT
