Affiliated Building Inspectors

We are using SBS 2003, XP Pro and Office 2003.
We want to have at least two users be able to similtaniously schedule
building inspection appointments on a shared "office" calendar.
The inspection appointments are then divided up and assigned to each of the
inspectors.
A scheduled appointment assigned to an inspector appears on the inspector's
calendar and on the "office" calendar as a meeting between the inspector and
the "office".
We created a user account named "office" so that the "office" calendar and
"office" contacts could be shared.
The IT consultant who is setting up our servers says that Microsoft just
announced that it is no longer supporting shared claendars, contacts nor
tasks; that Microsoft now only supports public folders.
Public calendar is not as easy to access and use.
Is there anything problematic about using shared folders that we should
consider? Why has microsoft taken this position? Any information would be
helpful.

I think there's a 'communications error' somewhere. Perhaps the consultant
has a link or a PSS (MS Support) statement to that effect. Actually I heard
that it was public folders that would be on their way out with the next
version of Exchange.

I think it's just a misunderstanding, on someone's part. Shared folders in
Outlook 2003 are *very* mainstream and dropping support for one of the
biggest collaborative features of their flagship desktop product seems
*very* unlikely.

Define "shared folders" - Netfolders maybe?

Netfolders were an Outlook experiment that failed - they disappeared with
Outlook 2002. Public folders still work and will continue to work for
approximately 5 years (longer if you don't upgrade to the version of
Exchange that comes out at that time).

From the sounds of it, you might have been using netfolders - although you
need to clarify what the consultant meant when he said they "just announced"
they no longer support shared calendars and find out exactly how you were
sharing them before so we can properly advise you.

I doubt they were using NetFolders as the OP says in his post they are using
SBS 2003, Windows XP and Office 2003.
