Shared Contacts vs. Global Address List

This company is running Outlook 2002 and Exchange 2000. We
currently have approximately 1,800 contacts in a shared
folder for 10 people in the office to view/edit. The
problem we are having is the limit on the number of
contacts Microsoft allows in a distribution list.

My question is, what is the advantage/disadvantage of
storing all of our contacts in the Global Address List in
order to set up larger distribution lists? Do the e-mail
adresses kept in the GAL have to be on the server (i.e.
only employees)?

Thank you for any help in advance!
