Shared workbook - should I try Open Office?

Hello all
At the risk of starting something, should I be considering a switch to
Openoffice for the following situation?

We are running a shared workbook maintained/used by 5 users on Excel 2000 /
XP Pro

No external links - about 2.5MB

Was running fine for a few months, last couple of weeks become difficult,
now impossible, to save across the network. Have shifted the workbook itself
across 3 of the 5 PCs with no difference in performance. Still works fine if
returned to single user status. Each folder containing the workbook on each
of the PCs we've tried it on now has a nice collection of temporary Excel
files all approx same size as the workbook (such as ABFD5000 etc)

A couple of friends more experienced than I have suggested that this is
common for Excel shared workbooks and that it "really doesn't work all that
well".
Have only tried this on the XP Pro PCs and also wondered whether the OS
might be relevant. Any difference for example if I put it on a server
running Linux?

Wondering what experience others might have and whether something like
Openoffice might work

tia, Ian
