SharePoint Services Site Project ID

In PWA under Manage Windows SharePoint Services sites, I have been
noticing that the Project ID that is generated for the SharePoint
Services Sites is not incrementing consistantly. We had the Project ID
jump from 994 to 1888. It will increment by 1 for a couple of sites
then make another large jump.

What is generating this ID and is there a reason why it would do this.

According to Microsoft, there is no problem with this. There is no
rhyme or reason as to how the project ID is generated. They claim it
will not hurt anything.
