Sharepoint Webhosting Co. Options?

J

Jim

Hi,

I am upgrading from FP2000 client to FP2003 client, a key
reason being to utilize Sharepoint Services (or at least
try them out to see I like them).

I found out my web hosting company, Interland
www.interland.com, does not yet enable Sharepoint via my
shared TrueBasic plan.

The rep. thought they might offer it for their pricey
dedicated hosting plan, but given the site I maintain
for our condominium, this is not an option.

I am 'lobbying' Interland (a huge hosting company) to
provide this feature, but did not get positive vibes on
this happening soon.

Is there a list of decent, cost effective hosting
companies that will enable Sharepoint, and if so could
you provide a link?

If Interland does not offer this capability by next
March, I will seek out an alternative hosting company
that does.

Note to Microsoft employees reading this, you should have
your people contact Interland, which long has touted
themselves as a FrontPage friendly hosting company, to
offer Sharepoint Services capability on ALL hosting plans.

Thanks.

go to the FrontPage section of Microsoft's site. look for something called
"web presence providers" and you'll find a list of companies that will have
what you need.

Note to Microsoft employees reading this, you should have
I think that is too much to ask or expect. The new Sharepoint
falls under the banner Windows Sharepoint Services which
gives every indication of being a super product. Extemely powerful
but power costs money. Microsofts intent is to provide full hosting
for this for companies that can't self provide. Others will follow.
It configures best with a dedicated SQL server
(I can't see the DBA's of an ERP SQL server saying
"Sure you can attach your install of WSS to us")
and loads of disk space. Such hosting should definitely
command a premium pricetag.
Once you play with it you will see the scope of WSS
now and especially in a little while when it is fully exploited by Joe
Office user.

Typical WSS hosting is not that expensive (depends on # of users) relative to normal non WSS hosting
For and Example see http://www.apptix.net/pricing.aspx
Many hosts offer a free 30 day trial

The WSS I used would be exploited as a rather large corporate portal for a
number of users
so I was thinking 100's of GiGs of space plus the speed to make it run.
With document, check in check out etc. but YMMV.

That actually sound more like a SharePoint Portal Server (supports WSS) rather than a WSS
- you may need to compare both to match you needs

Not exactly, this is the product I was referring to
microsft.public.sharepoint.windowsservices
Even a small company would, would easily
need these requirements I mentioned if
they embraced using it.
