I have been using sharepoint for a few weeks and have just installed onenote
2007. I can create a new notebook in Sharepoint, but can I access the
original documents/sharepoint areas via Onenote?

Do you mean can you access items stored in SharePoint which are not in the
newly created Notebook? Like other document lists, etc.? No. OneNote
requires that its data be stored inside of a Notebook. Some of the items
such as calendars and contact/tasks lists can be viewed in Outlook,
however.
