Sharing an Inbox

I have permission to view my boss's Inbox, and I am an "Editor" in his
delegates tab, because I need to be able to delete messages out of his inbox.
It seems like when I open and read a message from his inbox on my end, the
message appears as open and read on his end as well (even if he hasn't read
the message yet). Is there a way to keep his messages "unread" if I'm the
only one who has opened them?

There is no separate list being kept for marked as read by the owner or
marked as read by delegate.
You can change your "Mark as Read" setting by going to;
Tools->Options-> tab Other-> button Reading Pane...

You can also mark the messages as unread again via the Edit menu.

As an alternative you could also negotiate other means of informing your
boss of items that still need to be read by him like flagging them (with or
without reminder).

Personally I have all options to automatically mark my mail as read disabled
and use CTRL+ENTER to mark items as read.
