sharing information between Project and Excel

I am using Project 2000 and Excel 200. I need to put some information in the
project file into the excel file. I go to the project file and copy the
cell. I then go to the excel file and "paste special" - link - excel format.
All is well. I updated the project file and verified that the change showed
up in the excel file. Then I closed both files. When I reopened the excel
file, it prompted to update the links. I said yes. Now all my links say
#NAME?. I tried opening the project files and updated the links - same
problem. Has anyone seen this.

Or is there another way to link a cell in project to a cell in excel?
