Sharing .MDB file in Vista..

For our project at work, we have had an Access Database developed for
multiple users.

It's split into a "front end" and "back end" as described previously in many
of the threads in this newsgroup.

The "back end" is hosted centrally on an external hard drive attached to our
workgroup - Western Digital MyBook World Ed.

We have been having issues with poor performance, and so decided to migrate
the "Back End" to a shared folder hosted on a spare Vista PC. (3/4 of the
machines connecting to this DB are Vista, 1/4 are XP)

However, I've set the folder up to be shared - and other users can
successfully access it across the network.

Now however, there is an issue. The "Front End" locks up, when a user tries
to open up the main database form - if there is another user already logged
into the back end.

E.G the main window, where we can select from a couple of different forms,
loads fine for all users.

The first person to click through to access the main database interface can
get through, and it loads successfully.

Any subsequent users cannot - the machine just "sticks", until the logged-in
user exits.

Effectively, we can only have a single user accessing the system this way.
Yet, before, multiple users were no issue.

I'd be grateful for anyones assistance.

(incidentally, the Vista machines are Home Prem., XP is Pro)

Make sure that all users have full permissions, including read, write,
change, create, and delete, on the folder containing the back end.

So far as I can tell, they have. From what I can see, I have allowed every
account Full Access under the Permissions tab. That includes "Everyone" and
"Guest" as well as the local machine User Account.

I did read a garbled english post about this having to be set in two
different locations on the Shared Folder properties - is this the case (i.e.
the Sharing tab and separately under the Security tab)? I think thats what
I've done, from what I can recall from this afternoon. I will double check
tomorrow.

However, I've just found where the change needs to be made to force
permission changes to cascade down a directory tree. I'll change that
tomorrow.

Beyond the permissions issue, is there any other factor that may affect the
inability to successfully share this file?

Not that I can think of, assuming that users have their Default Open Mode
option set to Shared, and are not explicitly opening the file for exclusive
access.

I wish I could give you more detailed instructions about setting the
necessary permissions in Vista, but I'm still new to Vista myself. So while
I know that all users must have full control of the folder, so that they can
create and delete the .ldb file, I don't know exactly how to go about
bestowing those permissions.

It seems to me I've read of networking problems when connecting to a
Vista machine from an XP machine. You might want to google this and
check it out.

Thats true - I've had a look at a number of these posts, and to no avail.

Posted in the Vista networking discussions also, but no reply thus far. I
keep my fingers crossed!
