Sharing Onenote on W2K3 server

I have a problem on creating a new onenote folder on a share on W2k3 server.
I am using Onenote 2007 on XP pro SP3. The DC is a W2K3 server with SP1. No
Sharepoint server!
I want to create a new onenote folder on a shared drive.

When doing that, I get a message, that this was not possible, due to
- missing rights (I can work on the share from explorer)
- share not available (I can work on that share from explorer)
- wrong letters in path (there are only standard letters in the path name)
- name of path too long (15 letters at all)

In my opinion, none of this is really the problem.

I tried "usage on different computers" as well as "multiple users on
shares". Both have the same problem.

Any ideas about that?

Best Jens

Are you able to create a folder using explorer?

Ilya,
Jens has meanwhile asked in German NG too.
He reported that IIS is running on the server.
He has no problems to create files from the Explorer.

It would be nice if might have a second look on the problem.

TIA

Hello,
If IIS is running, that might be due to a bug. For more details, check out
David Rasmussen's blog here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/david_rasmuss...1-can-t-create-notebooks-on-some-servers.aspx

Ilya, I know that blog already, thank you.

I did as following:

1) Go to the folder where you want the notebook in Windows Explorer (e.g.
go to \\fileservername\filesharename )
2) Create a new folder with the name you want the notebook to have (e.g.
notebookname )

I made a new folder z:\\notes\onenote

3) Right click that folder and choose "Open as Notebook in OneNote

I can open the folder with right click on the folder "open as onenote
folder"

4) The folder will open up as a blank notebook in OneNote. Then click on the
message in the middle of the screen to create the first section and you're
good to go.

I create some text there, just blablabla ...

The problem now is, that this folder is shown in the left bar as NOT
synchronized.
Also, I see a head line, telling me, that synchronization needs a password.
I can see a list of password protected parts / notebooks.

So, the workaround, described in the blog, is not working.
We are using XP SP3, onenote SP1 and W2K3 Server SP1.

In the blog, it is written, that "you broke my onenote" with SP1 for Office
2007. But that was in December 2007. Now we have September 2008, 9 month
later, but still no bugfix. I learned from the blog, that I am not alone
with the non working bug fix, but also, that there is a internal bugfix
since March this year.

Is there no interest from Microsoft to solve this issue, which is a blocking
issue to use onenote for a lot of people?

Best Jens

By the way, does somebody know, who the mod from the german onenote
newsgroup is? That list is just filled up with spam since weeks, but nobody
cares about or removes it. Not very inviting, to search tones of spam to
find articles about the main issue of the group ;-)

Yes, there's SPAM from time to time.
But one can easily *delete* it in the newsreader (just the Del/Entf key)
and there remains nothing where one would have to wade through ;-)

After step 4, try rightclicking the notebook, going into the properties
dialog, and changing the location to the proper path
(\\fileserver\share\notebook\)

The fix is still in the pipeline; it should be available soon. It will
be on Micfosoft update once it is released.

Ilya, thank you for that. Now the workaround is working.
