Sharing resources from a subproject inside a master project

When I try to share resources from one of the subprojects within a master for
a task in the master project, the Share resources option is grayed out and
cannot be selected. Do I have to create a separate resource file for use by
all subs and the master?

You don't have to, but that is the way it is generally done, yes.

I figured out that if I opened all the subproject files at the same time as
the mster, the shared resource option was a live choice. If I decided to
create a shared resource file now, would that mess the resource assignments
I've already created? How would I change the assignment from a particular
subproject's resource sheet to the Shared resource file.

Hi,

This sounds different from what I am used to.
Are you using Project Server? Or a very old version of Project like 4.X?
