Is it possible to share a Word document in the same way as
in Excel. I would like to put a document onto the network
that several people can access and modify at the same time.
All the modification will be in a table and so no two
people would be working on the same cell at any time.

No, this is not possible. Only one user at a time can have a Word document
open for editing. Opening a Word document creates an "owner file" or "lock
file" (the ~$<filename>.doc file you see in the document folder) that limits
other users to Read Only access.
