short character limit when creating database

I don't know if this is the correct newsgroup to be using,
but here is my problem...

When I save my *.xls file into a *.dbf file, all of my
cells get cut off as the database file seems to have a
character limit of 9 characters per cell. Is there anyway
to get around this -- create a database file that has a
higher character per cell limit?
