Shortcut for § Section Character not Working

K

kmcnet

I am writing legal documents that require numerous uses of the § character.
I am able to insert the symbol using the insert symbol function. When I try
to set up a shortcut or use the shortcut keys (it appears that alt+0167 is
the combination), it does not insert the symbol into the document, at least
not where I can see it. I also tried adding a different shortcut and was
uscussessful. Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What version of Word are you using?

If Tools - Customize - Keyboard isn't working, it might be a problem with a
corrupted normal.dot (or normal.dotm if Word 2007). You can pursure this
possibility by looking at the resources/diagnotic steps shown here (the name
notwithstanding):

In the meantime... An alternative method would be to use an AutoCorrect
entry to insert it. Insert a section character, then select it, and choose
Tools - AutoCorrect Options - AutoCorrect tab. In the Replace field, type
something you'd like to automatically convert into the § character, such as
(s) (which would make it consisten the copyright & trademark symbols).
Click Add - OK.

Now, when you type (s) (or whatever shortcut you choose to use), it should
automatically convert to §.

Thanks for the response. I'm actually working on two different computers,
one with Word 2007, the other with Word 2003. Neither one seems to work. I
am accessing the shortcut setup by Insert Symbol/Shortcut Key. Do you have a
computer that you can try it on and that it works?

Thansk for the assistance.

Yes. It works perfectly in both Word 2003 and 2007 here. I just used it to
assing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+A to the § character... and it works fine in both.

What shortcut are you trying to assign? I wonder if it's one of those
keystrokes that can't really be changed, and Word simply isn't telling you.

I placed the cursor in the document and then held down the alt key and typed
167 while holding it down. Nothing happened. It appears this is the correct
shortcut.

You do know that you have to type the numbers on the numeric keypad? You
can't use the numbers on the number row of the main keyboard. And if you're
going to use it often, you'd do better to assign a custom shortcut.

In your original post you said the shortcut key was Alt+0167. In
your last post you said Alt+167. You must use the leading zero.

And make sure that NumLock is turned on.

And... Alt+0167 doesn't really seem like a shortcut to me, and not easy to
remember, either. (s) as an AutoCorrect entry would be easier, as would
assigning some Alt+letter key, particularly if § is something you need
often.
