Is there a keyboard shortcut to get to the first column. Right now I'm
having to shift tab. Thanks.

Thanks JE:
To take it once step further.
If I'm in C5, and click return, why does it have to go to C6, how can I tell
Excel I want it then to go to A6. Thanks!

Well, since you have the Preferences/Edit/Move Selection After Return
set to "Down", how should XL know you want to go to A6 rather than C6?

Actually, if you're entering a list of contiguous data, XL often figures
out you want to go back to column 1. Try this:

Enter something in A1, tab to B1 and enter another value, then do the
same for C1. Hit Return. XL moves the cursor to A2. Repeat for B2 and
C2, etc. The key is to have contiguous data.

Yes you are right it is doing that. In fact. If I enter data in A1 and tab
to C1 and hit return, it's going to B1, great! Even with nothing in A2.

But on other days, I hit return (from C1) and it goes to C2, which was the
reason for the post.

So I don't understand the inconsistency.

It's not which day, it's which cells you have populated. If XL can
reasonably guess that you're working on a list (i.e,. continguous rows
and columns populated), it will return to the left-hand column of the
list. If it can't tell - i.e., too many blanks to make a contiguous
pattern, it defaults to the preference setting.
