Shortcut key to disable external monitor

When using powerpoint to project song lyrics (for churches)...

It would be good to have a shortcut key to blank out just the image sent to
the projector (external monitor via VGA port) but allow the user to continue
to see the slides on the laptop screen.

For example, if you need to find a slide or make an edit during a
presentation/performance, you can just project a blank slide while making
changes.
I understand this is a hardware control issue; but I think everyone uses the
place a piece of paper over the projector lense technique when you are trying
to resolve problems. The problem is that you don't want to touch the
projector because you can not turn it off and on easily (because it has to
cool down).

The best solution for this is to use a dual monitor set-up where the
projector is not showing what the monitor in front of you is. This allows
for changes during a presentation that will not show up on the screen.

You may want to look at a few of the PowerPoint in church type sites, some
have excellent tutorials on how to set this up. You can also look at:

Yohs,

Some projectors have a special key on their remote controls marked as "pause or blank", that will either turn the
projector to blank or "freeze" the current image. So you could freeze the projected image.....mess about with your
powerpoint slides.....then un-freeze the projector and the audience will not notice you have been twiddling with your
powerpoint slides.
