shortcut to folder

I put a shortcut to a file where my working files are
stored my stored on the start menu. The first time I did
it the folder allowed me to see which files are in it and
select which ones I wanted. Like all the program folders
on the task bar.

I have made a couple other shortcuts now and they open the
folder in a new window.

How do I get the folder to NOT open a new window and to
act like a normal the rest of the folders in the programs
menu? Is that clear as mud or what!! I hope someone
knows what I mean.
