shortcuts won't open

Office 2000 on Windows NT workstation
Any desktop shortcut or recent documents that opens with a
MS Office program, stored in the local My Documents file,
won't open unless Office program started first.

Do you encounter an error message when you utilize the shortcut?
Additionally, does the same error occur if you open a document, rather
than a shortcut, outside the application?

I get error message "cannot find the file 'c:\my
documents\[whatever the filename is].doc or one of its
componets. Make sure the path and file name are correct
and that all required libraries are available" We have
made sure the path and filename are correct. I don't know
what file libraries to check. Short cuts for anything else
open OK. It's just the shortcuts that open with Office.

And do you encounter the same error message if you open the document,
not the shortcut to the document, using File/Open in the application?

If not then this could be caused by one of two issues:

1. If you have Norton AV then in Norton Options turn off "Enable
Office Plug-in" found in the Miscellaneous section.

2. There is corruption or an error in the Registered File type. You
can recreate the file associations by:

- Go to Start/Run and run the appropriate command for the Office
application in which you are encountering the error message:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note there is a space before the forward slash.

Yes, I can open the file from the File/Open in the
application OK. I Have NortonAV v5.0. In options, I did
not see a Miscellaneous section or anything refering to a
Office Plug-in.
I ran the commands to register the associations to no
effect.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. on the
unregister command if you need them:
