Should finish date adjust automatically with manual edits

Hello,

I have noticed that if I manually set the hours that a task will be worked
on in the Resource Usage view (to bring in the date of a task), the finish
date of the task does not change automatically - is this the expected
behavior? I know that automatic calculation is set, so I am not sure if
something is not working properly or if I am misunderstanding something...

Thank you,

Bob

Look at the Task Type settings. The task may be of type Fixed Duration,
change it to Fixed Units and see what happens. Also, might you have another
constraint such as "Finish No Earlier Than"?
If there is more than one resource assigned to the task, you can reduce
"Mike's" hours in the resource view, but if Fred is still loaded at 40 hours
and 100% then the task will still take 5 days.

Thanks Jim, that was it! It is a fixed duration task, and although I only had
2 hours work assigned, duration was set to over 5 days with a ? by it (I
assume this got set when the task got spread out over more days intially...)
Once I set the the duration back to 2 hours the finish date adjusted as
expected.

Thanks for the help.

A task type of "ficed duration" means that when work is edited, resource
assignment percentages are recalculated and vice versa, when assignments are
edited, man-hours will be recalculated. Don't think of task types as
something static or established by policy. They really are switches so that
when you are editing task parameters, Project performs the correct
calculation. Depending on precisely what you are changing and why you're
changing it, the task type can change many times during the course of
developing the project plan.
