Should We Make the Switch to FrontPage?

M

Missy

I currently edit/maintain our website in Netscape composer (which is not very
user friendly) and I'm debating on creating an entirely new site in
FrontPage. I've had several people caution me though that once Front Page
Extensions are enabled we could never FTP into the server again without a
risk of trashing the permissions and wiping out the entire site, including
e-mail files.

I'm assuming if we switched to FrontPage there'd be no need to FTP? Any
suggestions/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I have used FTP with extensions and not blown up sites, but I will agree that
it requires a deeper understanding of the mechanism. In the majority of
cases, you will never have to return to FTPing files if you go with
FrontPage, so you are also correct in that assumption.

The latest version of FrontPage is even more friendly if you go with a
SharePoint enabled provider, but locks you even further into the MS world.

Of the various WYSIWYG tools, FrontPage has one of the nicest sets of site
management tools. I also like the design surface better (than Dreamweaver)
when you are working with tables. There is a lot in the box in extras. There
are a few areas where I feel Dreamweaver is a better option, so I use both in
conjunction.

Hope this helps.

Missy,

I also manage several sites for clients that require their graphics and
multi media companies to upload files to their web server.

All of them FTP their files to a specified directory and I have never had a
problem with SE corruption.

In general you have been misinformed, especially the "Wiping out E-mail"
I'll have to add that one to my Top FP Urban Legends :))

If you have a good host company that supports the extensions, and you use
FrontPage to manage your site you will be fine.
