show minimize window selection for Excel

The Minimize / Maximize selection which appears top right hand corner when
opening Excel has disappeared. If I open a new Workbook the work book has the
minimize / expand options but not the Application itself. How do I minimize
Excel so that I can see other documents open on the desktop?
