Show window preview thumbnail on task bar start menu grayed out

I am trying to display a window preview (thumbnail) on my task bar. It
displayed at one time and then stopped displaying. On the start menu
properties, the check box box for showing thumbnails is grayed out. This is
in Word using Vista Howe.

How can I turn on thumbnail previews
