Showing current paragraph style (Word 20007)

As a longtime user of Word, I'm used to seeing the paragraph style displayed
at the top of the window. My office has switched to Word 2007 (just in time
for Word 2010 to be released!). The current paragraph style no longer seems
to be displayed, but only shows if I pull down the style list, and then I
have to scroll until I see the highlight. Is there an easier way to make it
show?

You can add the classic Style dropdown to the QAT. It will then display the
style at the insertion point.

Found it-- Alt-H L A displays a box for this.

dropdown to it?

You can add the classic Style dropdown to the QAT. It will then display the
style at the insertion point.

The QAT is the Quick Access Toolbar, which defaults to a little toolbar
above the Home tab. If you click the down arrow at the end of that toolbar,
one of the choices is "More Commands". That will open the Customize dialog.
Set the category dropdown to All Commands. Locate and click on the item in
the list that says "Style" and shows a square containing an I-beam cursor
and a down arrow. Then click the Add button in the center of the dialog, and
click the OK button. That places a dropdown on the toolbar, which will
display the name of the style at the cursor location (if the selection isn't
extended to cover text with two or more styles).

But that doesn't stay resident in the same way as Suzanne suggested (and Jay posted a full 'how to' guide). You can also move the QAT to below the Ribbon where it may be easier to note the style and reach the command buttons.

I would suggest that you use Ctrl+Shift+S to display the (non-modal) Apply
Styles dialog. It will always show you the style that is applied to the
paragraph in which the selection is located and every tiem you use that key
combination, the focus is moved to the Style Name control and if you want to
change the style, with the Autocomplete box checked all you have to do is
type enough of the Style Name for it to appear in that control and then
press Enter to apply it.

But this requires pressing a keyboard shortcut. If you put the classic
Styles dropdown on the QAT, you can see what style is applied to any
paragraph just by clicking in it.

But the Apply Styles dialog simplifies switching from one style to another.
I actually have a macro run by a button added to the Ribbon (simple to do in
Word 2010) that displays that dialog with one click.
