"Shrink to Fit" in Print Preview

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have been using Word on the Mac for about 18 months now and I am becoming increasingly frustrated with one recurring problem. I have yet to get anything out of the "Shrink to Fit" button in print preview but "After several attempts Word was unable to shrink your document by 1 page"

What am I doing wrong? I vaguely remember a setting on older PC versions that let me set what things I would allow the Shrink to Fit to mess with ie: margins, font size, line spacing. I can't find anything that will actually let this feature work.

I don't recall whether any such variables were ever available, but the only
thing Shrink to Fit changes is font size. There may also be a limit as to
how much it will reduce that. As you may know, it only reduces by one page
in the first place. Even so, (although I never use it) I've done a little
testing here & it does appear to be broken.

Oddly enough, I don't recall having seen any other reports of it failing
here in the newsgroup. Please submit it in Help> Send Feedback, & I'll
report it from this end as well. If I get any response I'll reply here.

I have done some more snooping, and this really does appear to be broken. Two of my colleagues verified that they always get the same message. I may be remembering a long while back in WordPerfect about the margins, font etc. settings, but even if Word only shrinks by one page, and only does it by changing the font, it is still a very useful feature. I create handouts for teachers regularly, and shrinking a document by two or three lines with the click of one button is very useful. I will report it.

just posted the same query - i find it really frustrating too. my old pc used to shrink to fit, my office 2007 shrinks by a page but my mac says religiously 'unable to shrink by 1 page'. having this issue fixed would be invaluable.

Yes, & in Word 2004 it works also... It's just broken in Word 2008. It has
been reported, so MacBU is aware of it. I'm afraid that venting here in a
peer-to-peer newsgroup will not change anything no matter how much you beg,
plead or threaten :) If it is a meaningful issue for you please follow the
advice provided to the OP about sending feedback to MS. That is what they
monitor, so even having filed a bug report it they don't get any customer
notifications about a known issue not only will it not get fixed but quite
likely could be removed in the next release... Why spend the resources to
continue or address something when even the apparent few who notice it's
broken don't care enough to complain.

You probably have a trailing page with nothing on it. I messed around with it, and when I eliminated the page with nothing on it, it shrunk. Just place your cursor on the blank page, hit CTRL-Backspace and try it without the blank page. Wored for me.
