Shrinking Columns

What would casue my columns to shrink on their own ?
I originally thought maybe I inadvertently caused it by
having numerous worksheets selected, and then adjusted the
column width, but I just went through and re-adjusted all
the column widths on the various sheets, saved the WB, and
upon opening it, all the columns were shrunk. Very
frustrating. Any help or suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.
