Shrinking Visio file sizes and embedded pictures

I've done some searching and it appears that beginning with Visio 2003
you can compress embedded images whereas previous versions converted
all embedded images to BMPs. In previous versions, this resulted in
files getting larger than they needed to.

On our network I've identified 300+ Visio documents that were created
in versions prior to Visio 2003 that I would like to see if I can
compress them down in size. I took one 7 page 60 MB file that had 4
pages with simple gray-scale pictures on them that was created in
something prior to Visio 2003. In 2003 with the help of Format Picture
/ Compress at 95% the file size dropped to 3 MB.

Unfortunately on 3 of the 4 images I could not simply right-click on
the picture and chose Format Picture as this option was grayed out. I
was forced to copy the image to my clipboard, then paste it into
Microsoft Office Picture Manager (MOPM). From MOPM I dragged the image
(BMP format by default) back into Visio. Visio refused to put the new
image into my existing document but rather opened a new document and
placed it into said new document. I was able to delete the original
image in my 60 MB file, cut the image form the new Visio document and
paste into the old document. Only then was I able to right-click on
the image and tell Visio to compress at 95%.

All of this leads me to ask a couple of questions.

1) Are there any tools (purchase or otherwise) that assist in
compressing Visio files?

2) In lieu of use of a 3rd party tool, does anyone have a word of
advice as how to better go about shrinking older versions of Visio
files other than the way I've laid out above?

3) Is there a setting whereby I can drag a BMP from MOPM (or another
application) into an existing document as opposed to having Visio paste
it into a new document?

TIA

Update: by ungrouping the image I was able to forgo the need to past
into MOPM.

This part has been resolved.
