Shut off auto numbering?

I am doing time entries and sometimes it is 1.5 hours, then .5 then
2.0, and Word keeps forcing in numbers. I used to see an option to
completely shut it off in earlier versions of word, and help told me
"something" but it didn't work and now I can't even find what I did.

thanks

Try Tools/Autocorrect. In the Autoformat As You Type pane, uncheck the
Automatic numbered lists checkbox. Personally, I recommend unchecking
everything in that pane other than Replace Straight Quotes with Smart
Quotes.

Hi....

Do you happen to know the implications of the box "Define styles using your
formatting?" I have noticed styles seem to have a will of their own (no
specifics really, just things not happening the way they always used to).
Wonder if this little square (which I have checked) could be one of the
culprits?

Best,

Thanks so much for your responses. I remember it being something
seemingly illogical, but very simple. I only do it everytime i
reinstall or upgrade so it's difficult to remember.

thanks again
