shutdown winword.exe as background program

when I shut down word, winword.exe continues to run as a
background program, making it impossible to shutdown the
computer without shutting it down separately. ????????

Also, perhaps related: now when I try to write emails in
outlook, it says word is running and therefore cannot use
word to create the email format. This never used to
happen.

Any ideas are much appreciated.

Problems of this type are not unusual if you use Word as an email editor.
