Signature Issue -- Placeholder/Red X Displays Instead of Graphic F

Am using Outlook 2003, am trying to add graphic file to a text signature.
After fussing for some time (Active X, file path issues) one last issue seems
to exist. When I open a new mail, the signature displays but the graphic does
not. Instead there is a placeholder with a Red X. I have tried various
graphic file types -- .jpg .bmp .gif etc. I'd appreciate the help -- I'd
really like this to work and so far it's been VERY frustrating. PS I've seen
this asked before: I have no idea whether I'm using Outlook mail editor or
Word mail editor. I do know that the "advanced" signature feature opened
Word. If this is important, please advise on how to determine or change. Many
