Silly, self-inflicted, small Word issue

H

Herbert Eppel

A while ago I had a mysterious Thunderbird/Firefox delay problem that I
eventually managed to resolve following the procedure involving DDE
settings described by Nir at
<http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.support.thunderbird/browse_frm/thread/5fd2620d3a00f9a4>.

However, during earlier attempts to resolve the issue I seem to have
messed up my Word file opening settings.

Some of you may remember that I open Word files in WordViewer by default
and from there only open them for editing (via Alt+F, E) when necessary.

So far so good, but at present I see the annoying window shown here
<http://www.herbeppel.de/Screenshots/Word_Opening_Warning.png> every
time I want to open a file in Word.

The files open alright when I click OK so it isn't a big problem, but
nevertheless a minor nuisance.

I tried to rectify the situation by temporarily resetting the DOC
opening option to Word (after changing the file association DOC files
open directly in Word without the warning screen) and then setting it
back to WordViewer, but the problem returns after switching back to
WordViewer.

In case it is relevant, I'm running
Windows 2000, Word 2000, and WordViewer 2003

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Are you running Norton AV or Panda AV? If it is NAV, open NAV and disable to
the Office Plug-in option.

If it is PANDA, I am not sure what the solution is but I know that Panda may
cause the same problem.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm not running Norton AV or Panda AV (I use AVG).

Any other suggestions for rectifying the issue shown at

when I open DOC files in Word from WordViewer?

Try reregistering Word by using Start, Run and entering

winword /r

and press enter. Does that help?

Thanks for your further reply.

It asks for the MS Office 2000 SR-1 Professional CD.

Is this to be expected?

Yes, most likely. Office 2000 (and Office XP) are always asking for the
installation disk. This happens rarely with Office 2003 onwards.

Fantastic - winword /r seems to have done the trick!

This little problem had been annoying me for months - thanks for
providing the solution!
