simple drawings in word 2008

I'm new to 2008, and long-time Framemaker user.

There seems to be several ways of drawing simple diagrams in the flow of text. I want to do simple black & white figures: groups of rectangles, arrows, text labels, etc. I want to be able to group the objects, and label the whole figure with a caption.

In 2003, I used a frame. But for 2008, I'm confused by the bits & pieces I have read, and I want to learn to do this the 'right way'. How should I go about making a drawing in the flow of text?
Thanks for pointers.

Hello brojack;

Believe it or not that's a broader topic than you might think :)

Have a look at this Mactopia page starting with the Graphics topic & the
various sub topics within it - especially Objects, Diagrams, & Formatting
and Effects.

The Help menu will also provide plenty of information if you have an active
internet connection & you can always check in here for any specific answers
you need along the way. However, it's a good idea to have some deeper
insight on how Word files deal with graphic objects - quite differently than
most would expect. At the bottom of the page are two specific links to
additional information about "floating graphics" & the "drawing layer":

One other point to keep in mind is that drawing capabilities are somewhat
more fully implemented in PowerPoint & Excel. You may prefer to create your
graphics there then copy/paste to your Word document.
