simple protoype setup failing with query processing error

Thanks for reading.

We've saved an Excel 2003 PivotTable to a web page, selecting to
publish the PivotTable with interactivity.

I can view the PivotTable just fine from my computer but when a
colleague on the same network sitting right next to me tries to view
it, he gets the structure of the PivotTable controls but without data,
fields or anything very useful.

The message on screen says in the middle of the PivotTable says "The
query could not be processed: the data provider didn't supply any
further error information"

We've tried a few things, from silly to sad including opening the
Excel file directly, across a shared folder. Although in this case we
see more information, we can't manipulate the table and get an error
that says something like "Initialization of the data source failed...
please contact your network administrator"

I've looked and just can't seem to find anything that explains how to
setup a PivotTable using "Save as Web Page" and addresses the
datasource setup part.

Also when I click the Field List button in the PivotTable web
component I see a little datasource cylinder with a red X on it --
instead of a multicolored cube that appears on the working machine.

Do I need an ODBC connection on both client and server??? That would
be silly.
Do I need to share the .CUB file? Is there anything I'm missing here?

Thanks for your help in advance.
