Simple timeline

You'd think there would be a way to build a collapsed
Gantt, sort of like you'd see in an encyclopedia article
on the evolution of man or development of flight, where a
single column of data contains dates, the adjacent column
text labels. I've tried the x-y line chart, where x is
my date colunm and y is always the same, stored in a
dummy column, and it works, but then I can't use the
description column as my data label, so there's no
indication of the nature of the event. I've spent two
hours this morning, Excel, Project, Visio downloads,
templates and plug-ins, Crystal Reports, teaching sites,
and nothing. Please guide me if you can.
