Simplify Visio's UML implementation

Attempting to use Visio 2003 on Win XP SP2:

Here is a sample of the frustrations I go through very time try to use Visio
for any diagramming:

I started a Visio instance specifying block diagrams as template. While
working on “page1†I had a hard time selecting multiple components (to copy).
I used to have to use the shift key (weird!). Not too bad so far as I
eventually get multiple objects copied at a tim but not after I had to put
them in a group to copy. That should not have been necessary. The border I
added around these particular components (and moved to the background so the
children would be visible) just cannot be selected with the children – via
shift or ctrl key plus mouse click.

So page one gets done eventually. I insert page two and turn it landscape.
I search for “uml sequence†and get the resultant objects I need. I start
putting Object Lifelines on the page. When I start putting Message (call)s
on the page, I am unable to specify the appropriate text for them as this is
not a UML (who cares) file.

I start another Visio instance this time specifying UML as the starting
point. Go to File/Page Setup and specify landscape. Only it is not turned.
Finally I figure out that I need to go to the Page Setup dialog and on the
Page Size tab specify “Same as printer paper size†to get what I want. I
“select all†on the sequence diagram page I had on the previous “fileâ€, copy
and paste onto the new file/page. But all the text in the Object Lifelines
are now lost. I reenter them and start adding the messages and returns
between the objects. I stretch one of the activation lines and half the
Object Lifelines loose their text I entered. I delete a message and I loose
yet another Object Lifeline’s text.

I have worked with Visio back when it was THE sample application for OLE
implementation. But today unless you become some kind of expert in Visio, it
is a useless product.

All I want to do is drag the appropriate controls onto the drawing, hit F2
and enter the appropriate text. When I get a "protected" message I use right
click/properties and go enter the text there. Either way I loose text every
so often. Is there not a light version or mode of Visio that is simpler to
use?

Thank you.

Jean.
