simultaneous network file use

Hi All,

I'd like to have a file that others in my network can use fairly
simultaneously, ... and that they can all have open simultaneously.

The purpose of the file is for nurses to see which physician is up next in a
rotating fashion for covering the needs of physicians who are out of the
office.

Word is not a good choice for this.

Excel or Access would be better.

I am inclinded to make a simple Word document that looks something like:

doctor 1:
doctor 2:
doctor 3:
doctor 4:
etc

As each doctor is requested services for a patient, the nurse requesting the
service would put an "x" to the right of the doctor's name, producing
something like the following:

doctor 1: x x x x x
doctor 2: x x x x x
doctor 3: x x x x
doctor 4: x x x x

which shows the nurses that the next doctor up to take a problem to is
Doctor #3.

I am considering putting the file on each nurse's desktop and setting a
timer in the document to autoclose it 45 seconds after opening to help avoid
issues with others trying to open a file that is in use.

As I think about it further, maybe I should make a userform that tells the
nurse the file is going to close and a command button that puts an "x" in
the next location due and closes upon clicking the command button. That
sounds like it just might do.

I am just checking for ideas about what others have used. :)

For this, you need a database program, not Word. Word is not designed to
allow simultaneous write access to documents by different users. You could
have one person who can make and post changes and let everyone else read the
document in Word, and that is as good as it gets.
