since upgrade to office 2003, I can't get thumbnails in My Picture

Hi, I work in a company and my computer was recently upgraded from Office
2000 to Office 2003. Ever since, I can't see my thumbnails in My Pictures.
Well... I can see if the picture is a bitmap, but can't see gifs and jpgs. I
can see the image in the Preview screen, but that doesn't help if, for
instance, I'm adding a picture to an email and going through the list, I have
to depend on the name and hope it's right.
why would this be? I could see all the thumbnails when I had Office 2000.
I can't even figure out why Office would relate to this <sigh>
